2017 Annual Convention Report

Santa Clara Hyatt Regency and Convention Center

A special speaker opened the 2017 Convention! Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke of how music broke barriers for her. Her grandmother was her first piano teacher, followed by her mother. She was a piano performance major in a university in Colorado, but eventually switched to Political Science. To paraphrase Ms. Rice’s main points:  1) Music teachers influence their students greatly. Music study may or may not lead the student into a life of a professional musician, but the skills learned as a music student will open doors to a fulfilling life in other vocations; 2) No one will ever know what the future will hold for your students. Music-making opportunities may present themselves at the most seemingly random moments; 3) Music brings people together no matter what part of the world you find yourself in. Ms. Rice was an extremely articulated and engaging speaker who intertwined her talk with many personal memories of making music and being a life-long music student.

It was so good to see MTAC Pasadena colleagues/Business affiliates who attended the Convention: R. Anderson, C. Brennan, E. Chang, D. Harmel, T. Hodgson, B. Kong, C. Lee, K. Lobitz, Steinway Gallery – Pasadena, W. Tan, J. Xu, R. Yoder.

Friday Night concert: Class of 2017-2022 of Young Artist Guild members

Saturday Night concert: Piano Concerto Competition Finals

Sunday Night concert: VOCE State Winners

Monday Night concert: Featured guest artists Cheng-Chow Trio

and many, many, many Student Recitals, workshops, seminars, CM training, and business meetings over the course of 4 1/2 days. The Convention introduced a new pilot program – Classical Guitar for 2018 CM, and welcomed the new slate of MTAC State Board members at their installation on Monday Night Banquet.

Congratulations to the students of MTAC Pasadena Teachers represented in the Convention: R. Anderson, A. Bader, N. Tan-Chao, C. Chen, N. Charniauskaya, S. Cook, A. Hasunuma, H. Kim, T. Hodgson, B. Kong, D. Lee, A. Liu, B. Pan, A. Perry, X. Sun, S. Svrecek, J. Tsang, S. Wang, R. Yoder, C. Yoo.  (My apologies if I inadvertently missed anyone).

The Convention was definitely a place for inspiration, professional growth, and networking. Looking forward to having even more MTAC Pasadena Teachers participate in the 2018 Convention in Orange, CA!

MTAC Pasadena Branch, President

May 2017

You are invited to attend the Young Artist Guild (YAG) recital on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Church of Our Saviour in San Gabriel. Recital begins at 3 pm.

Our invited YAG is Andrew Edwards.

Andrew Edwards is a 3rd generation of Young Artists stemming from a legacy of teachers none other than our very own Earle Voorhies.

Earle Voorhies was one of Pasadena’s iconic figures in that he produced the greatest numbers of Young artists in the history of MTAC, closely followed by two other master teachers, Robert Turner and Bruce Sutherland.

For those who are unfamiliar with these teachers, they were legendary teachers and performers who contributed so much to the world of music teaching.

Andrew’s mother Alison Glass Edwards was also a rising star from the studio of Earle Voorhies and she also became a member of the YAG.

So Pasadena is proud to present a historical tradition in that we have a 3rd generation of a young artist, and in many ways, a tribute to Earle Voorhies with loving memories. I am sure he is beaming with pride.

Vera Hoalim,

MTAC, Pasadena Banch, YAG Chair
